Kata Pengantar


Assalamu`alaykum Wr.Wb.


Bapak, ibu, saudara/i dan sahabat sekeluarga yang dirahmati Allah SWT:


Kami menyambut dengan gembira keberadaan website Pengajian-Columbus yang digagas oleh beberapa anggota jemaah Pengajian-Columbus pada pertemuan awal, tanggal
29 Maret 2008 (21 Rabil’ul Awal 1429H). Pertama-tama kami ucapkan puji syukur kehadirat Illahi Rabbi, shalawat dan salam tercurah kepada jujungan kita, Nabiallah, Rasulullah SAW. Alhamdulillah, kita semua masih diberikan nikmat iman Islam. Terima kasih atas waktu yang telah diluangkan oleh beberapa kawan-kawan sekalian sehingga terwujudnya website ini.

Keberadaan website ini, yang insya Allah, selain akan mengintensifkan silaturrahim di antara anggota masyarakat Muslim Indonesia di Columbus, Ohio dan sekitarnya, seperti Athens, Dayton, Cleveland dan Toledo juga dapat menambah dan membagi informasi, pengetahuan dan wawasan bagi kita semua. Begitu pula untuk sebagian dari kita yang sekarang tinggal di luar Ohio.

Pengajian-Columbus adalah wadah untuk komunikasi dan memperdalam pengetahuan agama (dakwah) bagi siapa saja yang berminat memakmurkannya. Selain itu pengajian ini baik yang dua mingguan maupun yang bulanan/waktu-waktu tertentu berfungsi sebagai wadah untuk saling mengajak kepada kebaikan serta menjaga diri dari perbuatan yang merugikan atau merusak; saling menasehati dan mengingatkan dalam kebenaran dan kesabaran dengan beristiqomah. Adanya tempat berkumpul yang diisi dengan pengajian untuk menanamkan nilai-nilai etika-moral dan spiritual bagi keluarga kita adalah hal yang tidak terkira nilainya dalam kehidupan bermasyarakat seperti di Columbus, Ohio ini.


Era informasi dan globalisasi memang menuntut pendekatan dan cara-cara baru termasuk dalam penanaman dan sosialisasi nilai-nilai agama. Teknologi komunikasi seperti internet yang terus mengalami kemajuan luar biasa pesat sebagaimana juga sarana yang lain bisa berdampak positif maupun negatif, bisa bermanfaat atau pun merusak, menyebarkan kebaikan ataupun juga keburukan. Penyebaran pengetahuan, ide, nilai-nilai dan gaya hidup adalah di antara yang paling kita rasakan. Budaya konsumtif atau konsumerisme dan pop culture adalah yang paling cepat penyebarannya, terutama bagi warga muda, dalam hal ini anak-anak, generasi penerus kita. Konsumerisme membawa pada materialisme di mana manusia lebih tertarik pada pemilikan barang atau benda yang memberi kenikmatan fisik-jasmani dan kepuasan lahiriah yang artifisial ketimbang nilai-nilai kemanusiaan dan kebahagiaan batin. Demikian pula budaya pop lebih berfungsi untuk menggairahkan dorongan nafsu rendah yang mematikan jiwa dan kerohanian.


Diharapkan banyak sahabat lainnya warga Pengajian ini yang dapat mengisinya. Semoga pula website ini dapat dimanfaatkan sebaik-baiknya untuk tujuan yang telah dijelaskan di atas. Kami dapat dihubungi melalui:

The Obligation of Jum'ah Pray

Juma'h Prayer (Friday Congregational Prayer)

Besides the five obligatory prayers, Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) has also ordained the "Jumah" (Friday Congregational Prayer) as a necessary prayer on the Muslim Nation (Ummah) as is made clear in the following verse of the Holy Qur'an:“ O ye who believe, when the call is proclaimed to prayer on friday (the day of assembly), hasten earnestly to the remembrance of Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) and leave off business (and traffic). That is best for you if ye but knew”(Qur'an 62:9).

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also, in exhorting the Muslims to the importance of the Friday prayer said:“ They (people) will have to stop neglecting the Friday prayer or otherwise, Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) will seal their hearts and they will be counted among the negligent” (Reported by Imam Muslim).

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also says:“ He who deliberately neglects three consecutive Friday pray, Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala)will make a mark on his heart”(Reported by Abu Dawood).

By virtue of the above Qur'anic verse as well as the respected sayings of the Prophet (peace be upon him), the Friday Congregational Prayer is, therefore, a duty (Wajib) required from every adult and free Muslim who is in residence. Friday is a glorious day in Islam and represents a great weekly meeting in which the Muslims gather in the houses of Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) leaving aside all worldly affairs.

The "Jumah" prayer is therefore specific with a Sermon in which the mosque preachers (imams) discuss and deal with the daily problems of the Muslim's society and give enlightenment from the torch of Islam. The "Jumah" prayer reflects that Islam is a great Social order which fosters brotherhood, abhors disunity and discourages evils.The Jumah is not a duty on women, who instead, may perform the obligatory Dhuhr (Noon) prayer at their homes although they may join the Jumah prayers, if by doing so does not affect their household duties, or cause them any inconvenience.

The Performance of the Juma'h Prayer

Performance of the Juma'h prayer is only allowed in the Congregational Mosques where, Muslims congregate and from where the Imam gives them advice and spiritual insights. The tirne for the Juma'h prayer is the time of the Dhuhr prayer, although, some Muslim jurists and scholars are of the opinion that it is permissible to perform it before the sun reaches its zenith.

Much importance and reward has been attached by Islam to the timings of going to the
Friday Prayers can be noted from the following saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him):“ Any person who takes total ablution (ghusl) on Friday and goes out for the Friday prayer in the first hour (i.e. early), it is as if he sacrificed a camel (in Allah's cause), and whoever goes in the second hour, it is as if he sacrificed a cow, and whoever goes in the third hour, it is as if he sacrificed a horned ram, and whoever goes in the fourth hour, it is as if he sacrificed a hen, and whoever goes in the fifth hour, then, it is as if he offered an egg. When the imam comes out (to deliver the sermon), the angels present themselves to listen to the sermon”(Reported by Imam Bukhari).

However, it is a recommended Islamic tradition that the person comes up with the following pre-requisites before going out to the Friday Prayer:
· Undertaking Ghusl (total bath). The Prophet (peace be upon him) in this regard says:“ Ghusl on Friday innecessary (Wajib) upon every adult person”(Reported by Imam Bukhari).
· Putting on the best and cleanest of clothes.
· Perfuming of one self.

Having undertaken the above pre-requisites, the person then proceeds to the mosque in tranquility fully conscious of" Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala)". Upon reaching the mosque, the person enters by stepping in with the right foot first proclaiming the following private supplication:" BISMILLAAH WASALAA TU - WASSALAMU 'ALAA RASULULLAAH. ALLAHUMMA AFTAHLII ABWAABA RAHMATIK " which means:" In the name of Allah ... May peace and blessings be on the messenger of Allah. O Allah open to me the gates of your mercy ".

Having entered the mosque, the person comes up with two rakaats (minimum because there is no certain amount of Rakaats to be performed before Friday Salat) as salutation to the mosque in accordance with the following famous saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him):“ If anyone of you enters the mosque, do not sit until you have performed two rakaats”(Reported by Imam Al-Bukhari). The person then await for the sermon to start and may in the meantime read the Holy Qur'an and/or come up with whatever supplications he can.

When the Imam enters the Mosque, the "MUADHIN" (Prayer Caller), would make the "ADHAAN", (i.e. the call to the prayer) and the person would be answering the call in the manner already discussed earlier. When the Muadhin completes the Adhaan, the Imam climbs the pulpit to deliver the Sermon and the person is required to devote his whole attention and, is forbidden to talk or keep oneself busy with even minor activities in the course of the sermon.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) says in this regard:“ He who performs ablution properly and comes to the Jumah prayer and listens to the sermon attentively, will have his sins from the previous Friday plus three more days forgiven and he who occupies himself with pebbles during the sermon has performed badly”(Reported by Imam Muslim).

Upon completion of the first part of the sermon, the Imam sits down for a brief pause and then, stands up again for the second part of the sermon. After that, he comes down from the pulpit and the MUADHIN makes the second call for the prayer IQAMAH and a two rakaat congregational prayer is accordingly performed which is the same in all respects to the Faj'r prayer. Upon completing the Jumah prayer, a person may come up with voluntary prayers which if done at the Mosque consists of four rakaats (each two rakaats performed separately) but if, done at home (upon one's return from the mosque), consists only of two rakaats as the Prophet (peace be upon him), used to do.

Muslims, guests break Ramadan fast together

Alka Ahuja and her husband, Rajiv, had driven by the Noor Islamic Cultural Center in Hilliard many times, often wondering what went on inside the walls of the massive structure.

This week, they found out.

The Hilliard couple, Hindus originally from India, attended the center’s Experiencing Ramadan event on Wednesday. The interfaith gathering introduced non-Muslims to Islam and Ramadan, a 30-day period of reflection during which Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset.

“We felt there was so much hunger and demand on people’s part to learn about religious diversity as well as cultural diversity,” said Imran Malik, chairman of the board of the American Islamic Waqf, which oversees the center. “The more we know about each other, the safer, more-secure communities we can build together.”

Participants in the event received a brief overview of Islam, toured the center and watched evening prayers. They then were treated to a daily fast-breaking meal, also called an iftar, dining on dates, meats, rice, hummus, salad and baklava.

Youngsters who attend the mosque offered their own perspectives, telling the guests some of the foods used to break the fast in areas such as Somalia, Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia and Pakistan. The children spoke of family time, gathering at the mosque for late prayers, meals and fun, and waking before sunrise to eat.
One boy said the early meal is his favorite part of Ramadan, and his favorite food is scrambled eggs and pancakes.

“Thank God that IHOP’s open at 3 a.m.,” he quipped to laughter.

Among the guests was Collette Tucker of Dublin, who said she recently realized that she was taking her questions about Islam to her 11-year-old daughter, whose best friend is Muslim.

“I’d never experienced anything Muslim,” said Tucker, who attended with daughter Cameron and her 13-year-old son, Calvin. “I thought it was awesome. I wish I hadn’t waited so long.”

Malik said the center used to host a community meal annually but hadn’t in recent years because the dates of Ramadan are based on a lunar calendar and sunset times were late. The idea was reignited by the Safe Alliance of Interfaith Leaders, a group that seeks to increase cross-faith understanding in the Hilliard and Dublin areas.

More than 300 people responded to the invitation from Noor, where leaders are considering other ways to host interfaith gatherings throughout the year.

Christina Butler, president of the Interfaith Association of Central Ohio, said such events foster understanding.

“They bring a diverse group of people together for an evening of talking and sharing and certainly eating,” she said. “So it’s just another time to be with each other as human beings in a joyful atmosphere of celebration and sharing and learning about one another.”

Much like periods of fasting in Christian and Jewish traditions, Ramadan allows participants to experience how the needy might feel when they must live without food, water, shelter and clothing, Malik said. The observance ends with the Eid al-Fitr holiday, expected this year at sundown on July 28.

“The idea is you practice this on your own self for 30 days in a state of worship and individual form, and then take it to the next level and build the outreach, build the servicing of the community,” he said. “That is the actual essence of Ramadan.”

The Ahujas said they were intrigued enough by the event that they will consider returning to the center for an Islam 101 course.

“I didn’t know anything,” said Mrs. Ahuja, who was invited by a Muslim friend. “I think people need to know more about each other’s religions.”

Pertemuan Pertama

Alhamdulillah segala puji syukur kami panjatkan kehadirat Allah SWT. Selawat dan salam juga tercurah pada junjugan kita Rasulullah SAW dan keluarga beliau serta para sahabat, pada Sabtu sore, 29 Maret 2008 (21 Rabil’ ul Awal 1429H) kami grup Pengajian Columbus bertemu pertama kali dikediaman bapak Abbas dan ibu Fera Gitosuputro. Pada kesempatan mana kami mengundang juga Bapak Farizal, PhD dari Toledo. Beliau menyambut hangat undangan grup kami yang sekaligus menyumbangkan pesan2 ceramah beliau. Salah satu pesan beliau yaitu selain mengaji dan berdoa serta bertukar fikiran bersama, jadikanlah pula tempat pertemuan pengajian kita sebagai wadah memperkokoh tali silahturahmi sesama muslim. Jazakumullah khairan kathira pak Farizal atas wejangan2nya.
